Roadside Attractions and Samuel Goldwyn Films just announced the joint acquisition of longtime stand-up comic Bob Goldthwait's Sundance dramatic competition film, Stay. Financial specifics were not released int he announcement. The film revolves around Amy (remarkably played by Melinda Page Hamilton)and an impulsive, repulsive, and rather humorous sexual encounter from her past. This encounter haunts an otherwise seemingly normal young woman with a bright future and nice-guy fiance. However heeding the advice of family and friends to be honest with her fiance, Amy reveals her secret and all hell breaks loose.
"I've never encountered a film that so intelligently combines raunchy humor with warmth and emotional truth," said Eric d'Arbeloff, co-president of Roadside Attractions. "Bob Goldthwait's film is going to draw people for its outrageous premise, but they will leave the theater surprised how much it touches them. Both Roadside and Goldwyn are thrilled to have landed this wildly original comedy." No theatrical release date was announced, but feelings are it will bow next fall.
My two-cents: change the title so that this heart-warming film is not mistaken for the ill-fated Marc Forster vehicle Stay which was released earlier in 2005.
