The end of the 21st Santa Barbara International Film Festival was celebrated by presenting the awards at the Arlington Theatre in downtown Santa Barbara. Immediately following the film was a screening of Jason Reitman's film "Thank you For Smoking."
The winners are: (click link below) "In Memory of My Father" won the American Spirit Award. Directed by Christopher Jaymes, the film, which takes a plunge into second generation Hollywook royalty, stars Jeremy Sisto, Judy Greer, and Matt Keeslar.
The Special Jury Award went to "Live and Become". Directed by Radu Mihaileanu, the film is a look into personal and ethnic identity through a family eye during the U.S. and Israeli supervision of the Jewish Ethiopian population in 1984.
The York Entertainment Gold Vision Award went to both "The Hamiltons" and "Night of the Dog". "The Hamiltons", which is a mixture of blood, gore, sex themes and more, is directed by the Butcher Brothers. "Night of the Dog", a story of friendship being tested amidst one insane night is directed and starred in by The Six (Peter Atencio, Michael Patrick Burke, Jeremy Catalino, Peter Donovan, and Eshom and Ian Nems).
Best International Feature Film was awarded to "Tsotsi". The South African film is the story of a thug living in a shantytown in Johannesburg who discovers a baby in the back of the car he just stole. Directed by Gavin Hood, the film is also an Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film.
The Nueva Vista Award for Best Spanish ad Latin American Film wet to Malas Temporadas (Bad Times). Directed by Manuel Martin Cuenca about the struggle of to overcome past trauma and establish meaningful connections in Madrid.
Best Documetary Feature was given to "King Leopold's Ghost". Directed by actress Pippa Scott, the film explored the plundering of Congo by King Leopold II in the 1800s. It is narrated by Do Cheadle, Alfre Woodard, and James Cromwell.
Bruce Corwin Award for Best Live Action Short Film wet to "Spin". Directed by Jamin Winans, the hilarious film is about a dj's ability to alter consequences via his turntable.
Fund for SB Social Justice Award selected by The Fund for Sata Barbara, was given to "Sisters-In-Law," directed by Florence Ayisi and Kim Longinotto, is a fascinating look at the work of one small courthouse in Cameroon aide Muslim women find the courage to fight abuse.
The VAFTA/LA Award for Best Short Short Film under ten minutes was gavien to "Spin".
The 10-10-10 Student Screenwriting Competition winners were high school student Avery Medjuck from San Marcos and Laurie Tsou from UCSB. The Sotheby's Internation Realty 10-10-10 Studen Filmmaking competition winners were Shea Peinado, Santa Barbara High School and Christophe Faubert, of Brook's Institute.
The Santa Barbara Independent Audience Choic for Best Feature award went to "Joyeaux Noel". The Academy Award nominee for best foreign language film, was directed by Christian Carion. Staring Diane Kruger, the film is based on the true story of a truce being honored by all countries' soldiers during Christmas in WWI.
